Of Sight and Touch - The Ceramic Art of Donald-Eric Lim
Donald-Eric Lim is a ceramic artist whose creations can be seen in resorts, art galleries, and corporate and private collections in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, the Maldives, Qatar, Poland, UK, Spain and the USA.
Be it a pot, a vase or a bowl, his current works are based on the fluid patterns and vivid colours of nudibranchs (seaslugs), a marine specie that inhabits inter-tidal reefs and is known for its varyingly striking forms and extraordinary colours.
A pixelation method, unique to the artist, is used to build on the pure white porcelain body of his vessels. With a minutely pointed brush dabbed in clay slip stained with colour pigment, dot after dot is painstakingly applied to the surface, resulting in a profusion of textured dots set amidst a lavish display of streaks, circles and randomly sinuous lines. These form a surface that is delectable to sight and touch –– and a ceramic masterpiece that is as dramatic as it is exquisite.
“Nature’s perfect imprecision inspires my ceramic
creations. These porcelain vessels are the reflection of my passion for the
vivid colours and sensuous textures of living organisms, the interpretation
of Earth’s artistic canvas. I want to use one of the rarely glimpsed
resources from Nature to recreate its splendour in art forms that best embody
it.”
